Town Hall Tavern, Leeds

6 Jan

We visited the Town Hall Tavern today for lunch.

We may not have come upon the place as its not in the centre of Leeds where we normally would pass, but it was a ‘Groupon deal’ which Helen (@BakingAitch to all our twitter followers) had purchased a few weeks ago and because the forecast for today was fine and not as wild and windy as earlier this week we made a special journey to Leeds to take advantage of the deal which was 2 courses each for about £9 (Can’t remember what was actually paid for it!)

We were welcomed and seated and little Evie was of course with us too and she was starving so we ordered  an extra starter of freshy baked bread, house olives and Bloody Mary. These were brought immediately which was great, as a hungry child can get very fractious. Evie ate all but a couple of the olives which we pinched!!  I believe the bread was sour dough from Dock Street Market bakery and was very good.

My starter was from the January Detox menu which said ‘Super Food’ Salad. Giant couscous, purple sprouting broccoli, butternut squash, pomegranate, pink grapefruit, basil, granola & lemon dressing “Packed full of antioxidants” It was very light and fresh and extremely colourful although I dont think I had purple sprouting broccoli, its certainly asparagus on this photo.

Helen had the Pan seared mackerel with sweet onion tart and vine tomato pesto and said it was delicious.

My main course was ale roasted gammon, sorrel croquette potatoes & wilted greens.

Helen had the handmade Yorkshire beef burger with Wenslydale cheese, tomato relish, crispy bacon and dripping chips.

The service was good and the staff friendly and we really enjoyed our food. The bill for the food should have been in the region of £30 if we had not bought the Groupon deal and for the amount we actually paid thought it was a real bargain!
